The workspace template Joplin offers end-to-end encryption (E2EE), meaning:

    • your notes are encrypted on your device

    • only you control the password

    • no one at Gage.Care can see or access you information

    For best protection, we recommend:

    • choosing a strong encryption password

    • using device encryption (most phones and computers already do this)

    • keeping your device locked when not in use

This system is designed to reduce risk, not add to it.

What if I forget my encryption password?

    This is important to understand.

Because encryption is designed to protect you, there is no password recovery.
If the password is lost, the encrypted notes cannot be unlocked.

    We strongly recommend:

    • writing your password down and storing it somewhere safe

    • using a trusted password manager

    • choosing something strong but memorable

This trade-off is what ensures no one else can access your notes — including us.

    —-

    • for data in transit and at rest on sync targets, but it does not encrypt data locally at rest on your device by default.

    • End-to-End Encryption (E2EE): When enabled, Joplin encrypts your notes, notebooks, tags, and resources before syncing them to a cloud service (like Nextcloud, Dropbox, or Joplin Cloud). This ensures that only you — with your master password — can decrypt and access the data. The encryption uses AES-256 and is implemented via the Stanford JavaScript Crypto Library.

    • Local Data: Your notes are stored in an unencrypted SQLite database on your local device (e.g., C:\Users\[User Name]\.config\joplin-desktop on Windows). Anyone with access to your device can open and read this file using an SQLite browser, even if E2EE is enabled.

    • Security Implications: While E2EE protects your data during sync and while stored on remote servers, local data remains unencrypted. This means:

      • If someone gains access to your computer (e.g., via shared device or malware), they can read your notes.

      • The master password is stored in plain text locally, so if your device is compromised, your encryption key may be exposed.

    • Workarounds for Local Encryption:

      • Use Windows File Encryption (EFS) to protect the Joplin data folder.

      • Run Joplin as a portable app inside an encrypted container (e.g., using VeraCrypt).

      • Store the entire Joplin directory on an encrypted USB drive.

Bottom line: Joplin is secure during sync via E2EE, but not encrypted at rest locally.

For full protection, you must implement additional local encryption methods.

For highly sensitive medical/legal content, please use an encrypted document shared only with trusted individuals.
